New and used electric muffle furnaces from top brands including Snol and Nabertherm. Muffle furnaces are used across a wide range of industries for high temperature material testing, as well as curing of inorganic materials. They are often used for heat-testing building materials, rubbers and polymers.
Why are they called muffle furnaces? Most modern muffle furnaces are now electric, but that hasn’t always been the case. Once upon a time they would have used fuel to heat the furnace. Due to the requirements of testing, the sample needed to be protected from exposure or contamination with the fuel. So the testing chamber was kept separate, and protected from the fuel chamber, hence the name “muffle furnace”. Now of course, the furnaces are heated with electric elements, however the name has persisted.
