No matter how great your idea is, without funding it’s unlikely to become a reality. Research and development, lab equipment, facilities rent, and staff time are just some of the things you will need to get a project off the ground. So we thought it might be helpful to put together some of the current funding opportunities in the UK.
The British Academy
From small research grants to funding for global challenges, the British Academy offers grants and fellowships to support academic research, career development and wider engagement across the full range of the humanities and social sciences. Funding opportunities cover UK and international research from the postdoctoral level upwards, supporting the best ideas, individuals and intellectual resources.
UK Research and Innovation
The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) works in partnership with universities, research organisations, businesses, charities, and government to create the best possible environment for research and innovation to flourish. With a combined budget of more than £7 billion, UKRI brings together the seven Research Councils, Innovate UK and Research England.
Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
The BBSRC is part of UK Research and Innovation, We work with our many partners to benefit everyone through knowledge, talent and ideas. They invested £498 million in world-class bioscience in 2017-18. We support around 1,600 scientists and 2,000 research students in universities and institutes across the UK.
The Leverhulme Trust
Up to £500,000 is available or researchers based at universities, institutions of higher education or registered charities with university-equivalent research capacity, to undertake an innovative and original research project.
UK Government Innovation Competitions & Funding
The Wellcome Trust
The Wellcome Trust support researchers to take on big health challenges, campaign for better science, and we help people involved with science and health research, they support thousands of scientists and researchers in more than 70 countries, as well as innovators, educators and artists.
